SEO Backlinks: Article Platforms Where You Can Publish Yourself
Directories are the slow lane for backlinks. Article platforms are the fast lane: you publish, you get the link, and good content gets indexed within days. Here are the platforms I've actually published on — with indexing speed ranking, how to boost indexing odds, and FAQ.
1. The lineup
- Medium — high domain authority. Set your profile bio with your links, organize posts into public Lists, engage under already-indexed articles in your niche.
- Dev.to — developer-focused, great for tutorials. Canonical URLs supported for cross-posting.
- Hashnode — dev blogging with your own subdomain. Warning: AutoMod aggressively flags promotional "tool list" posts on free subdomains — write tutorials, keep same-domain links to 1–2 per post.
- Substack — newsletter + blog in one. Posts get emailed to subscribers and stay publicly indexed.
- Blogger Qiita WordPress — Google's own platform, indexes fast. Simple editor, zero friction.
- Hacker News / Reddit — not article platforms, but links posted in relevant discussions get crawled almost immediately. Engage genuinely; don't spam.
- Qiita / Note / Zenn — Japanese tech platforms with strong SEO. English tech content is accepted.
- Your own blog — the hub everything points back to. Mine: MyToolster Blog.
2. Google indexing speed ranking
Not all platforms get indexed equally fast. From my experience:
🐢 Indexes very slowly: Medium
So: put time-sensitive content on the fast four. Use Medium for the long game — its domain authority pays off once indexed, but don't expect it next week.
3. How to increase indexing probability
- Comment under homepage articles on the same platform. Engage with popular posts in your niche — that's how crawlers (and readers) discover your profile and your articles.
- Cross-link your articles across platforms. Each post should link to its siblings elsewhere. It builds a web, not isolated pages — and every link is a crawl path.
- Link to your platform profiles from your own website. Add your Medium/Substack/Hashnode/dev.to profile links to your site footer. It tells Google these accounts legitimately belong to you.
- Try different article formats. Tutorials, comparisons, deep dives, opinion pieces — varied formats get picked up by different discovery surfaces.
- Keep quality high. Thin content doesn't get indexed and doesn't rank. One solid tutorial beats five filler posts.
4. FAQ
Q: What if my account gets banned?
A: Keep backup accounts and warm them up gradually. Don't put all your content on a single account — spread across platforms and have spares ready. New accounts should start with genuine engagement before publishing promotional content.
Q: What if my article gets 0 reads?
A: Two things: increase the probability of getting indexed (see the five rules above), and keep publishing more high-quality articles. Zero-read articles are normal at first — indexing compounds, and volume plus quality is the only reliable fix.
The setup that works
One hub (this blog) + every platform linking to it + platforms linking to each other + your main site linking to all profiles. Publish on the fast-indexing platforms first, let Medium compound in the background. Write once, adapt per platform, cross-link everything.
That's the whole playbook. It costs $0.
